VISO is a short-duration withstand test, not the continuous working voltage. Speed, insulation and package ratings apply to the exact ordering code. Open Device details for timing conditions and sourcing checks.

Check the barrier. Then check the power.

Use these four steps before approving a part or an alternative.

01

Signal direction

Count forward and reverse signals, including clocks, data, enable and return paths. For SPI, review the complete interface and timing budget.

02

Insulation requirements

Match working voltage, insulation type, surge requirements, creepage and clearance to the system. Review the exact package's safety documentation.

03

Logic and timing

Check each side's supply and input thresholds, maximum propagation delay, skew and CMTI. Keep typical and guaranteed limits separate.

04

Isolated-side power

Choose an external isolated supply or a part with an integrated isolated DC-DC converter. Check output load, startup, thermal limits and EMI.

Signal isolator + external power

Logic→Isolation→Logic

Each side has its own supply. Internal regulators on a device do not necessarily transfer energy across the barrier.

Signal isolator + integrated DC-DC

Signal + power→Isolation→Powered side

Power crosses the barrier through the integrated converter. Specify the input / output voltage combination and available load.

Digital isolator questions

Practical answers for selection and purchasing.

What does a digital isolator do?

It transfers digital information between electrically separated circuit domains. A general-purpose digital isolator carries logic signals; protocol-specific isolators add the circuitry needed for interfaces such as I²C or USB.

What does 3F / 1R mean?

It means three signals travel from Side 1 to Side 2, and one travels in the reverse direction. These are four unidirectional channels. They are different from a single channel that automatically supports bidirectional, open-drain communication.

Does 5 kVrms isolation mean a 5 kV continuous working voltage?

No. The VISO figure in this table is a short-duration withstand rating. Review VIOWM / VIORM, insulation classification, surge ratings, package spacing and the applicable system requirements separately.

Does every digital isolator include isolated power?

No. Most general-purpose signal isolators require power on both sides. ISOW7741DFMR and ADUM5401ARWZ include an isolated DC-DC converter; their usable load depends on operating conditions. Internal LDO regulators alone are not an isolated power converter.

Can a standard two-channel isolator replace an I²C or USB isolator?

Do not select only by channel count. I²C requires the appropriate open-drain direction handling and logic thresholds. USB has protocol and speed requirements. Choose a device or circuit explicitly suited to the required interface.

Can I replace an optocoupler or another digital isolator directly?

Review electrical interface, pin assignment, supply, timing, startup / default output, package and insulation requirements. A similar function or footprint does not establish interchangeability. Send the original full MPN and approved replacement requirements.
