Read the relationships, not isolated numbers
A lower headline value is not automatically a better MOSFET. Voltage margin, gate drive, resistance, switching charge, package and temperature work as one system.
Drain-source voltage
Choose margin above the real bus voltage and expected spikes. Do not select directly at the nominal rail.
Continuous drain current
The headline current depends on case temperature and cooling. Check thermal limits and realistic PCB conditions.
On-state resistance
Compare at the gate voltage your circuit actually provides and account for the rise at operating temperature.
Gate-source drive
VGS(th) only indicates the onset of conduction. It is not the voltage for full enhancement.
Total gate charge
Lower charge can reduce driver demand and switching loss, but must be balanced against resistance and ruggedness.
Junction temperature and package
Power loss, thermal resistance, copper area, airflow and package determine whether the design stays within limits.

1. Define the circuit position
